Tuesday, December 11, 5:00pm to Wednesday, December 12, 5:00pm
Hosted by Benedictines for Peace
Federal Courthouse
State Street and South Park Row
Erie, PA 16501
Description: On the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, join a prayer procession for migrants and asylum seekers stopped at our nation’s southern border. For 24 hours, a banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be processed around the federal courthouse in Erie. Join the prayer procession for 15 minutes or for hours. Organizations, parishes, schools are invited to sponsor an hour and walk together. (Contact Anne McCarthy, OSB at bfp@mtstbenedict.org for a link to a doodle scheduling poll.) The Erie event is one of many faith-based actions being planned at the US Southern border and around the country between December 10 and 18. We have all seen the images of children running and being pulled away from tear gas fired from the US border to keep them away. We believe that US actions to stop these most vulnerable as they seek asylum is a moral crime. This 24-hour prayer procession reminds of their needs and of our responsibility as people of faith to act and advocate for their safety. Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron of the Americas, has been a model and symbol of hope and protection especially for the vulnerable and in poverty since her appearance in Mexico in December, 1531. Her message to St. Juan Diego resonates especially to migrants today: “Let not your heart be disturbed…Am I not here, who is your Mother? Are you not under my protection?....”
